Gṛhārambha Muhūrta: Auspicious Timings and Guidelines for House Construction
House construction should begin only after determining the auspicious timing for Gṛhārambha. Earlier, the broader elements such as ayan, season, and month were discussed. Here, the focus is on subtle timing aspects, including nakshatras, muhurta, lagna, and doshas that can influence the outcome of the construction.
Auspicious Nakshatras for Gṛhārambha
Certain nakshatras are highly favorable for commencing house construction. These include gentle and auspicious nakshatras such as Ashvini, Chitra, Moola, and Revati, along with Dhruva, Rohini, Uttaraphalguni, Uttarashadha, Uttarabhadra, Swati, Pushya, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Hasta, Moola, and Punarvasu. Starting construction on these nakshatras brings prosperity and harmony to the household.
Favorable Weekdays
In addition to nakshatras, certain weekdays are considered auspicious for beginning construction. All days except Sunday or Tuesday—namely Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—are favorable.
Auspicious and Inauspicious Tithis
Gṛhārambha is also influenced by the lunar day or tithi. Auspicious tithis include Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dvadashi, Trayodashi, and Purnima. Construction begun on these tithis is likely to bring positive results, prosperity, and well-being for the residents.
Conversely, certain tithis are considered inauspicious. Pratipada, especially in the bright half of the lunar month, can lead to poverty. Chaturthi may result in loss of wealth, Ashtami may cause disturbances and dissatisfaction among workers, Navami can lead to fear from weapons, and Amavasya may cause ruler's fear or Chaturdashi may result in the destruction of family members.
Panchaka Nakshatra Considerations
The nakshatras Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada, and Revati—collectively called the Panchaka—are restricted for certain construction activities, particularly the laying of pillars (stambha samucchaya). Other construction tasks such as foundation laying, walls, and beams can still be performed. This restriction ensures that specific structural and symbolic elements align with auspicious energies.
Doshas to Avoid During Gṛhārambha
Vāstuśāstra identifies several inauspicious influences or doshas that must be avoided when commencing construction. These include Yāmitra, Vedha, Upagraha, Kartari, Ekaragal, Lata, Chandāyudha, Krantipaat, Vyatipaat, Vedhriti, and Kulik Yoga, as well as combinations of tithis, nakshatras, and weekdays that create negative outcomes.
Lagna Yamitra
During Gṛhārambha, if the Lagna Nakshatra has certain inauspicious planets on the fourteenth Nakshatra from it, then Lagna Yamitra Dosha occurs. Sun, Mars, or Saturn in certain positions must be avoided.
Chandra Nakshatra Yamitra
If at the time of Gṛhārambha, the Moon falls on the fourteenth Nakshatra from its position, then Chandra Nakshatra Yamitra Dosha arises.
Vedha Dosha
During Gṛhārambha, the Saptashalaka Vedha system is used, which requires careful consideration of planetary positions. If any planet occupies the Nakshatra opposite the Gṛhārambha Nakshatra, Vedha Dosha occurs and must be avoided.
The Vedha combinations include Rohini measured from Abhijit, Mrigashira from Uttarashada, Punarvasu from Mula, Pushya from Jyeshta, Revati from Uttaraphalguni, Uttarabhadra from Hasta, Chitra from Purvabhadra, Swati from Shatabhisha, Dhanishta from Vishakha, and Anuradha from Ashlesha. For auspicious weddings, the Panchashalaka Vedha system is considered, while for Gṛhārambha, the Saptashalaka Vedha system is applied to ensure the timing and Nakshatra alignments are favorable.
Upagraha Dosha
If during Gṛhārambha, the Sun is in a Nakshatra and the Moon falls on the 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 14th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, or 25th Nakshatra from it, Upagraha Dosha occurs. These thirteen Nakshatras are considered inauspicious.
Other opinions state that if the Moon is in the 7th, 10th, 15th, 21st, or 25th Nakshatra from the Sun’s Nakshatra, Upagraha Dosha arises. Both methods are listed together in Muhurtaganapati.

Kartari Dosha
If during Gṛhārambha, there is a malefic planet in the 2nd house from Lagna and another malefic in the 12th house, Kartari Dosha arises.
Ekargala Dosha
If any of the yogas Vishkambha, Vachara, Parighra, Vyatipata, Shool, Vyaghata, Vaidhriti, Gand, Atigand exist, and the Gṛhārambha Nakshatra coincides with this yoga, then counting from the current Sun Nakshatra including Abhijit yields an odd number, causing Ekargala Dosha.
Lata Dosha
During Gṛhārambha, the Sun tramples one Nakshatra ahead of its own; the Moon at Purnima tramples 22 Nakshatra behind; Mars tramples the 3rd Nakshatra ahead; Mercury the 7th behind; Jupiter the 6th ahead; Venus the 5th behind; Saturn the 8th ahead. This is called Lata Dosha and must be avoided.

Chandayudha Paat
If Shool, Gand, Vaidhriti, Sadhya, Vyatipata, and Harshan occur together in a Nakshatra, this is called Chandayudha Paat.
Kranti Paat
If the Sun and Moon share the same Kranti, Kranti Paat occurs.
Vyatipata Dosha
Occurs as the 17th yoga in Panchang under Vishkambha and related calculations.
Vedhriti Dosha
Occurs as the 27th yoga in Panchang.
Kulika Yoga
Kulika Yoga occurs at specific time divisions of the day, depending on the weekday. On Sunday, it falls during the seventh muhūrta, on Monday the twelfth, on Tuesday the tenth, on Wednesday the eighth, on Thursday the sixth, on Friday the fourth, and on Saturday the second muhūrta.
These are considered the daytime Kulika periods. At night, the calculation is adjusted by reducing one from the daytime count. For example, on Sunday night it occurs during the thirteenth muhūrta, while on Monday night it falls on the eleventh muhūrta, and so on in the same sequence.
Careful avoidance of these doshas ensures that construction proceeds smoothly and auspiciously.

The Vāstu Chakra (Vrishabha Chakra)
The Vāstu Chakra, also known as the Vrishabha Chakra, is a detailed system for determining the influence of nakshatras on the house. Beginning from the nakshatra of the Sun at the time of construction, the first three nakshatras are placed at the head of the bull (Vrishabha). Four nakshatras occupy the front legs, four on the hind legs, three on the back, four in the right chamber, three in the tail, four in the left chamber, and three in the face, including Abhijit, totaling twenty-two nakshatras.
The effects of construction timing based on this chakra are as follows: if the nakshatras on the head are selected, there is risk of fire; on the front legs, the house may have to be abandoned; the western legs bring wealth; the back brings gain; the right chamber brings benefits; the tail leads to destruction of the owner; the left chamber leads to poverty; and the face brings constant distress.
The essence is that when counted from the Sun’s Nakshatra, the first seven Nakshatras are considered inauspicious, the next eleven Nakshatras are auspicious, and then the following ten Nakshatras are again inauspicious. This sequence continues in a cyclic manner, as explained in the Chakra.
